The secret code of the Swedish communal laundry room
The tvättstuga is not just a laundry room - it is a social institution with unwritten rules more binding than any posted policy. Here's how to navigate it.
What is a tvättstuga?
Most Swedish apartment buildings - both rented (hyresrätt) and owner-occupied (bostadsrätt) - do not have washing machines in individual apartments. Instead, residents share a communal laundry room called a tvättstuga. These rooms typically contain several washing machines (tvättmaskiner), a tumble dryer (torktumlare), and Sweden's distinctive contribution to laundry technology: the torkskåp, a heated drying cabinet that gently dries clothes over several hours.
Access is managed through a bokningssystem (booking system). In older buildings, this is a physical bokningscylinder - a cylinder mounted on the door with labeled slots, into which each apartment inserts their booking token (plupp or tvättlapp). Newer buildings use apps. Either way, the booking is treated as a binding social contract, not a suggestion.
Core vocabulary - with gender
Learn these with their articles. Gender matters here: torktumlaren (the tumble dryer) vs torkskåpet (the drying cabinet) use different endings because one is en and the other ett. Note that torktumlare ends in -are - almost always en by the suffix rule.

The five unwritten rules
These rules are never posted on the wall. Every Swede who has lived in an apartment building knows them instinctively. As a newcomer, you need to learn them explicitly - once.
Clean the lint filter after every use
The luddfiltret (lint filter) in the torktumlare must be emptied after every use without exception. You will find it behind a small door near the drum opening or at the base of the machine. It takes fifteen seconds. Not doing it is the single most reliable way to receive a passive-aggressive note under your door.
Vacate exactly when your time slot ends
Tvättstuga slots are typically 2 to 3 hours. When your time ends, the next person's time begins and they are waiting, possibly with a basket of laundry in their arms. Leaving clothes in the machine after your slot has ended is one of the gravest social violations in Swedish apartment life. If you're running late, take the clothes out and return them to your apartment.
Never use the machine during someone else's slot
Starting a wash in someone else's booked time - even if the room appears empty - violates the system. The booker may have left clothes running and stepped away. The booking is a social contract. Do not touch the machines when it is not your time.
Wipe the drum if you used liquid detergent
If you used fabric softener or liquid detergent, a quick wipe of the drum is considered courteous. The underlying principle: leave the tvättstuga in the same condition, or better, than you found it.
Book your slot correctly
In buildings with physical booking systems, insert your token cleanly into your assigned slot. In app-based buildings, book in advance - popular slots (Saturday morning, Sunday afternoon) fill days ahead. Never hold a slot informally or assume an empty slot is available; it may belong to an apartment currently between washes.
The passive-aggressive note
When a tvättstuga rule is violated, the response is almost never a face-to-face conversation. It is a handwritten or printed note - an arg lapp (angry note) - slid under the offender's door or left on the laundry room notice board.
The arg lapp has its own tonal register: formally polite, carefully impersonal, but unmistakably hostile. A typical example: "Vi påminner vänligen om att torktumlare ska tömmas efter varje användning." (We kindly remind everyone that tumble dryers should be emptied after every use.) This is addressed to one person, written in the third-person plural, framed as a general policy reminder. It is a very Swedish way of expressing displeasure while technically maintaining plausible deniability about who it is aimed at.
If you receive an arg lapp: do not knock on doors to discuss it, do not leave a response on the board, and do not take it personally beyond fixing the behavior. The correct response is silence and correction. The incident is then considered resolved.
Grammar: household chore verbs
Swedish laundry vocabulary uses regular verbs. The most common conjugation group adds -r in present tense and -de in past:
- att tvätta - jag tvättar, jag tvättade, jag har tvättat
- att torka - jag torkar, jag torkade, jag har torkat
- att boka - jag bokar, jag bokade, jag har bokat
- att hänga upp (to hang up) - jag hänger upp, jag hängde upp
- att vika (to fold) - jag viker, jag vek, jag har vikt - a strong verb in the third conjugation
Note that torka also means "to wipe" - context determines which: att torka kläderna (to dry the clothes) vs att torka av bänken (to wipe the counter).

Torkskåpet - Sweden's best-kept laundry secret
If you are accustomed to tumble dryers, the torkskåp will seem slow at first - a full load takes 4 to 6 hours. But the results are remarkably gentle: fabrics come out soft, unshrunk, and evenly dried. Swedish laundry wisdom: use the torktumlare for towels and bed linen, use the torkskåp for everything you care about.
Grammar note: ett torkskåp → torkskåpet. The word skåp is ett, and Swedish compound nouns inherit the gender of their final component. Any compound ending in -skåp is ett - this is the compound-word rule in action.

Frequently asked questions
- What is a tvättstuga in Sweden?
- A tvättstuga is a communal laundry room shared by all residents in an apartment building. Instead of having washing machines in individual apartments, buildings typically have one shared laundry room with several machines, dryers, and drying cabinets (torkskåp). Residents book time slots in advance using a booking system - traditionally a physical booking cylinder (bokningscylinder) on the door, increasingly a smartphone app.
- What are the unwritten rules of a Swedish tvättstuga?
- The core obligations: clean the lint filter (luddfiltret) after every dryer use, wipe down the drum if you used liquid detergent, vacate the room exactly when your slot ends, and never start a wash during someone else's booked time even if the room appears empty. Leaving clothes in the machine after your time slot is considered one of the most serious violations of tvättstuga etiquette.
- What is a bokningscylinder?
- A bokningscylinder is a physical booking cylinder mounted on the laundry room door. Each apartment has a token (often called a tvättlapp or plupp) that residents insert into their assigned time slot to claim a laundry booking. It is a fully analog system with no digital confirmation. Many Swedish apartment buildings still use them, though apps are increasingly common in newer buildings.
- What Swedish vocabulary do I need for the laundry room?
- Essential words: tvättstuga (laundry room), tvättmaskin (washing machine), torktumlare (tumble dryer), torkskåp (drying cabinet), tvättmedel (laundry detergent), sköljmedel (fabric softener), tvättid (booking slot), bokningssystem (booking system). Key verbs: att tvätta (to do laundry), att torka (to dry), att boka (to book), att centrifugera (to spin).
