Swedish Time & Calendar Nouns: En or Ett?

Time units are one of the most predictable areas of Swedish grammar: they are almost always en-words. En dag (a day), en vecka (a week), en månad (a month), en timme (an hour), en minut (a minute), en sekund (a second) - the article en holds across all common time units.

This rule is reliable enough that even less common units follow it. One notable exception with ett is decennium (a decade), which follows the -um rule (ett-words ending in -um). But the basic units of daily life - days, weeks, hours - are uniformly en.

Parts of the day are also consistently en-words in Swedish: en morgon (morning), en förmiddag (late morning), en kväll (evening), en natt (night). This consistency makes talking about your daily schedule very predictable once you know the rule.

Swedish has a rich vocabulary for expressing time. The word tid (time) is en: en tid. Seasons, holidays, and calendar events also tend to be en-words: en vår, en jul, en påsk. Mastering this category gives you a solid grammatical foundation for everyday conversation.
