Swedish Body & Health Nouns: En or Ett?

Body parts in Swedish are mostly en-words, but there are several important ett-word exceptions that you will encounter constantly. Learning these early prevents a persistent source of mistakes.

Key ett-words for body parts: ett öga (an eye), ett knä (a knee), ett öra (an ear), ett hjärta (a heart). These four come up in everyday speech often enough that memorizing them as a set is worthwhile. Also note that bröst (chest/breast) is ett.

The majority are en-words: en kropp (body), en hand (hand), en fot (foot), en tand (tooth), en arm, en nacke (neck), en rygg (back). For most body parts, en is the safe default - but the five ett-exceptions above are high-frequency enough to learn specifically.

Health vocabulary follows a similar pattern: en hälsa (health), en sjukdom (illness), en skada (injury) are common en-words. Swedish healthcare is part of everyday life and vocabulary - knowing the correct articles for sjukhus (ett), apotek (ett), and vårdcentral (en) helps you navigate the Swedish healthcare system.
